IMPACTS AND ISSUES
The Young Heart Non-profit organization is made to provide aid and support to mainly the victims of disasters.
Natural disasters —such as tornadoes, floods, and hurricanes — and man-made disasters —- which includes war, industrial accidents, and technological failures (for example, nuclear accidents) —- severely impact people across the globe, threatening their safety and livelihoods.
Red Cross International responds to “an average of about 65,000 disasters every year” around the world. According to Walden University, victims of natural disaster face more than physical injury and property loss. They can also often face long-term problems like PTSD, depression, and anxiety. In 2022, the results of The Household Pulse Survey said that 3.3 million US adults were displaced by either hurricanes, floods, fires, tornadoes or other disasters (The Guardian). The Society for Research in Child Development states that “Every year, 175 million children globally are expected to be affected by natural disasters, including floods, cyclones, droughts, heatwaves, severe storms, and earthquakes.”
Man-made disasters are just as devastating as natural ones. One of the most common type of man-made disasters is war. The war in Ukraine has been one of the most critical examples in recent history. An International Rescue Committee article reports, “More than 12.7 million people inside the country require humanitarian assistance in 2025, including the 3.6 million people who are internally displaced.”
